Its funny about wheels, when I got the first chair, it seemed like the end of the world.
Everyone said I was "confined to a chair", now I know better, it is not a prison sentence, it is freedom!
Before I got my big chair [his name is Rincewind] I was stuck in bed for most of the day, staring at four walls.
All I had was my music, my talking books, eventually a modified computer, and too much spare time to think about what I was missing in life.
Of course I went through the usual depression, who wouldn't, becoming disabled is definately a life changing experience.
However , I was really lucky, one day I came across a site called "Wheelchair Junkie".
Most of the people who wrote on its message board, used wheelchairs just like me,
BUT, they did things I had never dreamed were possible, one guy even went backpacking half way round the world with his power chair, a jeep and his carer!
It was a whole different way of thinking - a powerchair cuold mean freedom to do what you wanted.
Now I feel really sad when I read, or hear about someone who feels trapped in their chair.
One of my "wishes" is to visit rehab centers and show new powerchair users that they are not "confined to a chair".
I suppose I should introduce you to "Rinso" seeing that he is my constant companion.
He is big, blue and is officially called a
Quantum 6000, made by Pride Wheelchairs.
He is a rehab chair which means that he can be modified to meet my special needs.
Sound impressive, it is!
Before I got Rinso I could only stay in my chair for about an hour, now I am comfortable for more than 6.
He cost a great deal of money, but for me he is priceless!
I forgot to tell the most important thing -- he has 6 wheels and bright yellow springs, what more could a 65yo. grandmother want!
I really do get carried away when I talk about my chair, sound like a bloke with his precious car!
Now to chose a picture, then off to bed.
Untill next time -- Happy Days
